SUMIEN, Emma Lola, age 86, of Oceanside L.I. passed away peacefully on November 30, 2017. Lola's caring and generous spirit shined through every day. Known for her boundless energy and good heart, she was always thinking of others and would do all in her power to help if needed. Her generosity was not only extended to family and friends, but also to animals of all kinds: from stray cats and wild birds to injured pet turtles and goldfish. Somehow she instinctively knew how to care for them all. She always took great joy in celebrating life's milestones and accomplishments with friends and family. She was an accomplished costume designer and seamstress. Her creations have been worn by the "villagers" at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration on Long Island for years. She researched the clothing of the era extensively so her creations would always be historically accurate. Always ready for a challenge, her talents gave her the opportunity to create several costumes worn by Barry Bostwick, Jaclyn Smith and Patty Duke in the made for TV movie about George Washington. Lola could create just about anything with a needle and thread. Beloved wife of the late Louis Y. Sumien, loving mother to Michele and Bob Atkinson, Suzanne Sumien, Louis Jr and his partner Donna, Marie and Lloyd Amsterdam; loving grandmother (Nana) to Curtis and Lauren Fanti, Dustin Sumien, Averi Amsterdam, Bryce Amsterdam, Kristie Atkinson (Ryan) Jones, and Erin Atkinson; and loving great grandmother to Lola Fanti, Simone Fanti, Judah Fanti, Ryan Jorgensen, and Dylan Jones.
